Formation of Lake Meke
This is a crater lake formed after a two-stage volcanic activity. The crater, which was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption five million years ago, filled with water over time and turned into a lake. With the second volcanic eruption eight thousand years ago, a volcanic chimney was formed in the middle of the lake. The lake and primary crater pit are 800 meters long and 500 meters wide. The lake, which is 12 meters deep, is 981 meters above sea level. The volcanic cone in the middle of the lake, which has salty water, has a length of 50 meters. Meke Lake has a special importance as it is one of the few maar lakes in our country.

Attracting the attention of local and foreign tourists, the lake is seen as a black dot surrounded by blue waters from a bird's eye view. Even though it is called the "Evil eye bead of the world" with this feature, the lake started to dry up with the decrease of groundwater. Located in the region with the least rainfall in Turkey, the lake dries up completely during the summer months with the effect of evaporation. In winter, puddles form in places depending on the precipitation rate of the region. With the snowfall, the lake takes on a completely different beauty.

The lake, which is the only geological structure in Turkey and one of the few in the world, is one of the rare spots where migratory birds take a break. It is aimed that the water level of Lake Meke, which should be protected as soon as possible by preventing unconscious consumption of groundwater, will reach 1 meter again.
